Bamboo sheets for hot sleepers: Why they work and what to look for

You know the feeling. You climb into bed exhausted, finally ready to switch off, and within an hour you are too warm, kicking off the covers, flipping your pillow to the cool side for the third time. Hot sleeping is one of the most common sleep complaints in Australia, and for a lot of people it is just accepted as something they have to put up with.

It doesn't have to be!

The right sheets make a genuine difference to how hot you sleep. And for most hot sleepers, bamboo is the answer.

Why hot sleepers struggle with cotton and synthetic sheets

Most conventional sheets, including standard cotton and anything with a polyester component, absorb heat and moisture and then hold onto it. That clammy, warm feeling you get in the middle of the night is not just your body temperature. It is your sheets trapping heat against your skin and stopping it from escaping.

High thread count cotton is particularly prone to this. The denser the weave, the less airflow there is, and the more heat builds up underneath the fabric. It is one of the reasons that "luxury" high thread count cotton can actually feel more suffocating than a lighter, more breathable fabric.

Synthetic fabrics are even worse for hot sleepers. They trap heat, do not absorb moisture well, and can leave you feeling damp and uncomfortable through the night.

Why bamboo works differently

Bamboo fibre has a naturally hollow structure. That hollow core creates micro-channels in the fabric that allow air to circulate, heat to escape, and moisture to move away from your skin rather than sitting against it.

The result is a fabric that actively responds to your body temperature rather than just reacting to it. When you get warm, bamboo helps cool you down. When the temperature drops, the same properties keep you comfortably warm. It is this thermal-regulating quality that makes bamboo so well suited to Australia's climate, where summer nights can be relentlessly warm and winter mornings can arrive quickly.

Bamboo is also significantly more moisture-wicking than cotton. If you tend to sweat during sleep, bamboo pulls that moisture away from your skin and allows it to evaporate, keeping you drier and more comfortable through the night.

What to look for in bamboo sheets if you are a hot sleeper

Not all bamboo sheets perform equally well for temperature regulation. Here is what matters.

100% bamboo, not a blend. Some brands mix bamboo with cotton or polyester to reduce costs. Blended fabrics lose many of the thermal-regulating and moisture-wicking properties that make bamboo effective for hot sleepers. Check the label and look for 100% bamboo from organically grown bamboo.

Sateen weave. A sateen weave gives bamboo its characteristic silky, smooth feel and allows the fabric to drape loosely against the body, which helps with airflow. It is the weave we use for all of our bamboo sheet sets and the one most recommended for hot sleepers.

OEKO-TEX certification. This tells you the fabric has been independently tested and is free from harmful chemicals at every stage of production. It is also an indicator of quality manufacturing, which matters for how the fabric performs over time.

Generous sizing. Sheets that are too tight across the mattress restrict airflow and can trap heat. Look for fitted sheets with deep pockets and a flat sheet with plenty of overhang.

What our customers say

We hear from hot sleepers constantly. It is one of the most common reasons people come to Mulberry Threads, and one of the things they tell us has changed most since switching.

"Obsessed with these. Second set I have purchased. As a hot sleeper, they are perfect."

"These are so silky and soft and luxurious to sleep in. They absolutely help me feel cooler, as someone who sleeps hot and has done my whole life."

"Not waking up drenched in sweat is awesome."

"My hubby is a hot sleeper and even he has said he is sleeping deeper and less hot in his sleep."

Thousands of five-star reviews, and temperature regulation comes up again and again.

A few other things that help hot sleepers

Good sheets are the foundation, but a few other changes can make a real difference too.

Keep your bedroom cool. Even a small drop in room temperature has a measurable impact on sleep quality.

Choose natural fibres for your pyjamas too. Synthetic sleepwear traps heat just like synthetic sheets. Our bamboo pyjamas are made from the same breathable fabric as our bedding and are designed with hot sleepers in mind.

Go lighter with your doona. A lighter quilt that you can add a blanket to in winter gives you more control than a single heavy doona you are fighting with all summer. Bamboo bedding works best when you can layer it according to the season.

Wash your sheets regularly. Residue from body oils and sweat builds up over time and can reduce the breathability of any fabric. Washing your bamboo sheets weekly or fortnightly keeps them performing at their best.

Ready to sleep cooler?
